SUMMARY:Denim Day
DESCRIPTION:Order Your Denim Day Kit Today!\nJoin us in solidarity with sexual assault survivors this Denim Day\, April 29th. Kits include denim ribbons\, informational posters and postcards\, stickers\, and WCA materials to share with your colleagues\, friends\, schoolmates\, and more! \nSince 1999\, Peace Over Violence has run an inspiring and powerful campaign to practice solidarity and support survivors by renewing our commitment to exposing harmful behaviors and attitudes surrounding sexual violence. Denim Day is recognized on the last Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court to overturn a rape conviction because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove them\, thereby implying consent. Following the reversal\, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. \n \nSince then\, what started as a local protest to bring awareness to victim blaming and destructive myths that surround sexual violence has grown into a worldwide movement. \nAs the longest-running sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history\, Denim Day asks community members\, elected officials\, businesses and students\, and all individuals  to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on Denim Day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that continue to surround sexual violence. \n

SUMMARY:Movers for Moms
DESCRIPTION:Mother’s Day is a special time where moms worldwide should feel loved and appreciated. For many women\, this may not be the case as this holiday may be overlooked due to finances\, personal struggles\, or living situations where they’re relying on the support of shelters or other organizations due to homelessness or domestic abuse. \nTo ensure moms in need receive the love and appreciation they deserve this Mother’s Day\, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Boise is hosting its annual Movers for Moms® campaign to provide essential care items to the Women’s & Children’s Alliance (WCA). The collection campaign runs March 1 – April 3. \nThis year\, the Boise moving company is teaming up with local community partners like\, Les Schwab and Fred Meyers\, to collect essential care items for the WCA. February 9\, 1955 – April 4\, 2008 \nSusan Elaine Brubaker Newby died in 2008 during a mysterious horseback riding incident. After her death\, family\, and friends realized that SueB – her nickname – was likely in an abusive marriage. SueB’s sister\, Marj\, and friends\, Leslie and Teresa turned to the WCA as a way to honor SueB’s life and increase awareness about domestic violence. Their hope: “to help other successful\, smart\, beautiful women like SueB leave these relationships before it’s too late.” \n  \nAbout The Race:\nContinuing to honor the memory of Susan “Sue B” Newby\, The 16th Annual SueB 5K kicks off on Sunday\, October 5th at 12 pm at Julia Davis Park in Downtown Boise\, ID. Each participant will receive a free t-shirt*.  \nIn addition to the race\, there will be a community resource fair starting at 10:30 am that is open to the public. This is an opportunity to discover and learn about the fantastic resources that our community has to offer. Raising awareness and encouraging important discussions about domestic abuse has always been a passion of Sue’s family and friends. \nRace fees support our Endowment Fund to ensure the WCA can maintain our services and serve our clients for many years to come.  The object of this Endowment is to provide funds in perpetuity for the operation of all of the WCA’s programs to provide safety\, healing\, and freedom from domestic abuse and sexual assault. \nIn the heartfelt words of Sue’s sister Marj Sente: “Don’t wait until your sister\, daughter or mother is a victim of domestic abuse or sexual assault\, step forward now and make an investment in the WCA to raise awareness about domestic violence.”   \nThis is a great opportunity to celebrate positive relationships with your family\, friends\, and coworkers. Will you join us? \n  \nAbout The Course: \nThe 2025 SueB 5K course starts in Julia Davis park on the pathway between the Rose Garden and Boise Art Museum. Participants will venture onto the Boise River Greenbelt and travel east\, staying on the north side of the Greenbelt. There will be an aid station with water at the halfway point (near Kristen Armstrong Park). Runners and walkers will then turn and head back towards Julia Davis park\, finishing where they started! \nCHECK OUT THE FULL COURSE HERE\n  \nPacket Pickup Information:\nWed. SUMMARY:Clothesline Project for Domestic Violence Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Since 1998\, the WCA has organized a local display of the Clothesline Project for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Project began in Hyannis\, Massachusetts\, to give a voice to victims and survivors of domestic violence and create a powerful public display of what is too often considered a private matter. Since 1990\, it has grown dramatically\, promoting awareness of the realities of domestic and sexual violence in communities and universities throughout the country. You can learn more about the national Clothesline Project here. \nEach year\, we invite participants in our support groups for survivors of domestic abuse and their children to paint t-shirts portraying their experiences with violence\, victimization\, and healing\, as an exercise in art therapy. With the painters’ permission\, the WCA delivers clotheslines of these shirts to hang in businesses and organizations around Boise to raise awareness of the lasting impacts of domestic abuse in our community. Every year we are moved by the range of experiences our clients have shared on these shirts. The pain and fear\, but also the hope and healing that they depict bear witness to the long\, difficult road from abuse to freedom. \nMany thanks to all of our friends and partners who have joined us in spreading awareness of domestic abuse. \nTo host a clothesline display for DVAM 2025 please fill out this Google Form.\n

Yet somewhere along the way\, many of us lose touch with the essence of who we are beyond our roles. \nIn this empowering and nurturing session\, leadership coach and speaker Angela Taylor will guide participants through a reflective and interactive experience that reconnects them to their Joyful Purpose—the intersection of their values\, gifts\, and lived experiences. \nWhether you’re a stay-at-home mom\, a corporate leader\, or somewhere in between\, this session will help you realign with your unique path\, honor your evolution\, and leave with clarity\, confidence\, and a sense of community. \nBecause when women are rooted in their purpose\, they radiate power—and empowered women do empower communities. \n  \nPanel Discussion: \n \nShari Baber\, Business Owner\, Community Advocate: With 30 plus years in Idaho\, Shari has earned lots of experience in building community connections. I believe in challenging the status quo by making my service relationship-oriented rather than transaction-oriented\, and I look forward to building a relationship with you and your family. I love working with self-employed borrowers and VA loans. I am proud to have been recognized by the U.S. Dept. Of Veterans Affairs as the No. 1 VA loan originator in Idaho\, totaling more than 1\,200 closed loans to date. I am also proud to have been recognized ten times by Mortgage Originator Magazine as one of the top 200 originators in the United States. Outside of work\, I’m committed to making a difference. I have chaired more than 100 nonprofit events\, and I’m not stopping anytime soon. When I’m not doing community service or helping families finance great homes\, I enjoy listening to smooth jazz\, being on the water\, and spending quality time with my family. \n  \n Laura Honn\, Board President\, Wild Hearts Idaho & Philanthropy Director\, WCA: With a combination of a passion for community impact and engagement with business-orientated strategies\, Laura Honn said putting people first is key to her leadership style\, a style that combines British and American philosophies. Honn also serves as board president of Wild Hearts Idaho\, a nonprofit organization centered on building leadership skills in teen girls through outdoor adventures. Honn also enjoys mentoring others who are just starting out in their career journeys and those seeking to improve themselves.

SUMMARY:Denim Day
DESCRIPTION:April 30\, 2025 is Denim Day\nDenim Day is a day-long awareness campaign that allows us to honor survivors of sexual assault and start conversations about the dangers of victim-blaming. \nWhy denim? In 1992 an 18-year-old Italian girl was sexually assaulted by her driving instructor. While he was initially convicted of the crime and sent to prison\, the ruling was later overturned by the Italian Supreme Court because the justices felt that because the victim wore tight jeans\, she must have helped remove them thereby making the act consensual. \nThe following day the women of the Italian Legislature protested this decision by wearing jeans to work. As news of the decision spread\, so did the protests. In 1999\, Peace Over Violence\, an agency in Los Angeles\, CA established the first Denim Day in the US — a tradition that has grown and continued since. \nWays to Get Involved \n\nWear denim or\, if jeans are not an option in your work environment\, wear a “Ask Me About Denim Day” sticker or denim ribbon on April 30\, 2025.\nListen and Believe Survivors\nStart a conversation with your friends\, family\, and/or coworkers by sharing about the issues surrounding sexual assault\nHost an awareness event or host a fundraising event at your work or within your community (email outreach@wcaboise.org)\nPost photos\, statistics\, and info about local resources and share on social media @WCA_BOISE with the hash tag #DenimDay and #WCABoise. Tag the WCA’s social media pages and we’ll share your photo as well!\n\nPlease visit our video demonstration on YouTube to create your own Denim Day Ribbons. \n\nVisit the National Denim Day Website here. \nTo order other WCA Outreach Materials please click here. \nQuestions?
