DESCRIPTION:April 30\, 2025 is Denim Day\nDenim Day is a day-long awareness campaign that allows us to honor survivors of sexual assault and start conversations about the dangers of victim-blaming. \nWhy denim? In 1992 an 18-year-old Italian girl was sexually assaulted by her driving instructor. While he was initially convicted of the crime and sent to prison\, the ruling was later overturned by the Italian Supreme Court because the justices felt that because the victim wore tight jeans\, she must have helped remove them thereby making the act consensual. \nThe following day the women of the Italian Legislature protested this decision by wearing jeans to work. As news of the decision spread\, so did the protests. In 1999\, Peace Over Violence\, an agency in Los Angeles\, CA established the first Denim Day in the US — a tradition that has grown and continued since. \nWays to Get Involved \n\nWear denim or\, if jeans are not an option in your work environment\, wear a “Ask Me About Denim Day” sticker or denim ribbon on April 30\, 2025.\nListen and Believe Survivors\nStart a conversation with your friends\, family\, and/or coworkers by sharing about the issues surrounding sexual assault\nHost an awareness event or host a fundraising event at your work or within your community (email outreach@wcaboise.org)\nPost photos\, statistics\, and info about local resources and share on social media @WCA_BOISE with the hash tag #DenimDay and #WCABoise. Domestic abuse is the #1 cause of homelessness in Idaho. The free wraparound services offered by the WCA to our community and shelter clients directly links to reducing the crisis of homelessness in Idaho. The need for your support is ongoing and is growing each year. \nYOU CAN PAVE THE PATH TO SAFETY!\nYour vital gift will allow the WCA to meet the unprecedented need of WCA services in our community. Every month\, your gift supports the healing journey from intake\, to an exit into safe housing. \nTHE DIFFERENCE $120 MAKES.\nOne safe bed night at the WCA’s shelter facilities costs $120. Your gift of $120 funds and facilitates a safe bed night as well as wrap around services for an individual in our community who needs safety at WCA’s shelters. In 2024/2025\, we are facing a shortage of necessary funding for shelter services. We are asking our community to come together to fund 120 safe bed nights. \nDemystifying the crisis of homelessness caused by domestic abuse:\n\n98% of domestic violence survivors also experience economic abuse.\nDomestic abuse creates barriers to housing\, many survivors are in dire need of financial support and empowerment and case management.\nAs our local and state populations increase\, so do reported cases of domestic abuse.\nCombined with the fact that rent has increased by an average of $474.46 per household (that’s 41%)\, a record number of members within our community are in need of the services offered by the WCA.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 15th annual SueB 5k  Memorial 5K\nContinuing to honor the memory of Susan “Sue B” Newby\, the 15th annual SueB 5K Fun Run will kick off on Sunday\, October 6\, 2024 at 12 noon at Julia Davis Park. \nRegister Now!\nThis event has always been about outreach and honoring the memory of Susan “Sue B ” Newby who died in 2008 during a mysterious horseback riding incident\, that was likely a domestic abuse incident.  After her death\, family and friends realized that SueB was likely in an abusive marriage. SueB’s sister\, Marj\, and friends\, Leslie and Teresa\, turned to the WCA as a way to honor SueB’s life and increase awareness about domestic abuse. Their hope is  to help other successful\, smart\, beautiful women like SueB leave these relationships before it’s too late. SUMMARY:The Clothesline Project
DESCRIPTION:  \nSince 1998\, the WCA has organized a local display of the Clothesline Project (CLP) for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Clothesline Project began in Hyannis\, Massachusetts\, to give voice to victims and survivors of domestic violence and create a powerful public display of what is too often considered a private matter. Since 1990\, it has grown dramatically\, promoting awareness of the realities of domestic and sexual violence in communities and universities throughout the country.  \nEach year\, we invite participants in our support groups for survivors of domestic abuse/sexual assault and their children to paint t-shirts portraying their experiences with violence\, victimization\, and healing as an exercise in art therapy. With the painters’ permission\, the WCA delivers clotheslines of these shirts to hang in businesses and organizations around Boise to raise awareness of the lasting impacts of domestic abuse in our community. \nPlease consider hosting a Clothesline Project display during the month of October to raise awareness about domestic abuse and sexual assault in our community. Each year an individual who has made a positive impact on the growth and advancement of women is honored. After her untimely death in 1979\, the YWCA named its highest award in her memory and has awarded this special recognition every year since 1980. \n  \nRead more about Joyce Stein and the history of this award here. \n  \nNominations are welcomed from individuals\, businesses and organizations.
