SUMMARY:Clothesline Project for Domestic Violence Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Since 1998\, the WCA has organized a local display of the Clothesline Project for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Project began in Hyannis\, Massachusetts\, to give a voice to victims and survivors of domestic violence and create a powerful public display of what is too often considered a private matter. Since 1990\, it has grown dramatically\, promoting awareness of the realities of domestic and sexual violence in communities and universities throughout the country. You can learn more about the national Clothesline Project here. \nEach year\, we invite participants in our support groups for survivors of domestic abuse and their children to paint t-shirts portraying their experiences with violence\, victimization\, and healing\, as an exercise in art therapy. With the painters’ permission\, the WCA delivers clotheslines of these shirts to hang in businesses and organizations around Boise to raise awareness of the lasting impacts of domestic abuse in our community. Every year we are moved by the range of experiences our clients have shared on these shirts. The pain and fear\, but also the hope and healing that they depict bear witness to the long\, difficult road from abuse to freedom. \nMany thanks to all of our friends and partners who have joined us in spreading awareness of domestic abuse. \nTo host a clothesline display for DVAM 2025 please fill out this Google Form.\n

February 9\, 1955 – April 4\, 2008 \nSusan Elaine Brubaker Newby died in 2008 during a mysterious horseback riding incident. After her death\, family\, and friends realized that SueB – her nickname – was likely in an abusive marriage. SueB’s sister\, Marj\, and friends\, Leslie and Teresa turned to the WCA as a way to honor SueB’s life and increase awareness about domestic violence. Their hope: “to help other successful\, smart\, beautiful women like SueB leave these relationships before it’s too late.” \n  \nAbout The Race:\nContinuing to honor the memory of Susan “Sue B” Newby\, The 16th Annual SueB 5K kicks off on Sunday\, October 5th at 12 pm at Julia Davis Park in Downtown Boise\, ID. Each participant will receive a free t-shirt*.  \nIn addition to the race\, there will be a community resource fair starting at 10:30 am that is open to the public. This is an opportunity to discover and learn about the fantastic resources that our community has to offer. Raising awareness and encouraging important discussions about domestic abuse has always been a passion of Sue’s family and friends. \nRace fees support our Endowment Fund to ensure the WCA can maintain our services and serve our clients for many years to come.  The object of this Endowment is to provide funds in perpetuity for the operation of all of the WCA’s programs to provide safety\, healing\, and freedom from domestic abuse and sexual assault. \nIn the heartfelt words of Sue’s sister Marj Sente: “Don’t wait until your sister\, daughter or mother is a victim of domestic abuse or sexual assault\, step forward now and make an investment in the WCA to raise awareness about domestic violence.”   \nThis is a great opportunity to celebrate positive relationships with your family\, friends\, and coworkers. Will you join us? \n  \nAbout The Course: \nThe 2025 SueB 5K course starts in Julia Davis park on the pathway between the Rose Garden and Boise Art Museum. Participants will venture onto the Boise River Greenbelt and travel east\, staying on the north side of the Greenbelt. There will be an aid station with water at the halfway point (near Kristen Armstrong Park). Runners and walkers will then turn and head back towards Julia Davis park\, finishing where they started! \nCHECK OUT THE FULL COURSE HERE\n  \nPacket Pickup Information:\nWed.
