HARVEST FOUNDATION GRANT SUPPORTS VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Funds to Provide Financial Literacy Education

Boise, Idaho – The Women’s and Children’s Alliance (WCA), a nonprofit agency serving victims of domestic and/or sexual violence, recently received a $10,000 award from the Harvest Foundation to support financial literacy education.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, economic abuse occurs when the abuser separates the victim from their own resources, rights and choices, isolating the victim financially and creating a forced dependency for the victim and other family members.

The grant funds form the Harvest Foundation will be used to provide financial literacy education to victims of domestic and/or sexual violence. This component to the WCA’s direct victim services is a collaborative partnership using evidence-based curriculum designed to empower women to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Through personal financial and money management education, victims of domestic violence can move toward greater economic and personal autonomy and move away from abuser dependency.

The WCA’s collaborative community financial literacy outreach provides on-site education at twelve separate sites, thus creating partnerships that cooperatively address this critical economic issue.

“This donation from the Harvest Foundation will help us reach out to those who need our services in the community,” said Bev La Chance, WCA Deputy Director.

In addition to financial literacy education, the WCA offers safe shelter, two 24-hotlines, counseling, support groups, court advocacy, education and a variety of other integrated services and programs to women, men and children victimized by abuse.
