Meet Our Spring Interns!

24-Hour Domestic Violence Hotline: 208.343.7025 24-hour Rape Crisis Hotline: 208.345.7273 (RAPE)

We are fortunate to have a fantastic group of interns at the WCA this spring working with both the Outreach &  Communications and Philanthropy teams. Through these internship opportunities, the WCA is providing students with on-the-job training and educational opportunities that will help them obtain the knowledge and skills for the WCA and similar organizations to consider them as potential candidates for future job openings in the communications, public relations, advertising and other nonprofit fields. We are grateful for to have Melissa, Gabby, Delaney, Alexis, and Raven with the WCA this semester, collaborating with many staff members throughout the organization.

Melissa Hansen
Communications Intern – Outreach Focus (BSU)Melissa H ---Intern Spring 2020

Hi, My name is Melissa Hansen and I’m from Arroyo Grande, California. I am currently at Boise State, and I am graduating this May with a major in sociology and a minor in social and cultural advocacy. I am very excited to be interning for the WCA because I am passionate about encouraging safe and healthy relationships, and the WCA’s mission to foster safety, healing, and freedom from domestic abuse and sexual assault is something that is very important to me. Over the course of this semester I will be working towards the goal of getting the WCA more involved with Boise State’s campus and making sure that all students are aware of the many incredible resources offered by the WCA. I hope to continue working with nonprofit organizations with similar goals as the WCA even after my time here is up, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of people! If you meet me or see me at the WCA, ask me about my pets at home (I will probably show you pictures)!

Gabrielle (Gabby) Hora
Gabby H. Intern Communications Intern – Philanthropy Focus (BSU)

My name is Gabby and I am from St. Helens, Oregon. I am studying communication, psychology and nonprofit management at Boise State University. I chose to intern for the WCA because of my passion and connection to the cause as well as the opportunities and responsibilities that I would be allowed in this position. My career goals are still taking shape, but I hope to someday work in communications/PR. I would love to work for a nonprofit organization similar to the WCA. I know that the multitude of experiences this internship allows me will help broaden my resume and portfolio for future opportunities. Last semester, I worked on social media for domestic violence awareness month, including creating content for posts, scheduling social media, and reaching out to community partners. This semester, my focus will be working with the philanthropy team and supporting donor communications. If you meet me or see me at the WCA, ask me about my hometown and my favorite holiday!

Delaney O’Neill
Communications Intern – MarComm Focus (BSU)Delaney O. ---Intern Spring 2020

My name is Delaney and I am Camas, Washington. I am studying communication with an emphasis in public relations at Boise State. I am graduating in May of this year. I chose to intern at the WCA because my values align closely with this organization and I have a large passion for this mission. I am excited to help the WCA work towards their goals this semester. I hope to work in public relations in my future careers and hope to find organizations with goals similar to the WCA where I have the opportunity to help others. This semester, my focus will be social media, marketing, our media kit materials and helping The Shop with social media and marketing. I am so excited for this experience and am eager to learn as much as I can from this organization and this team. If you meet me or see me at the WCA, ask me about my semester abroad and my favorite hiking spots!

Alexis Staton
Alexis S. ---Intern Spring 2020Communications Intern – Prevention Focus (BSU)

Hi, my name is Alexis Staton, I am from Camas, Washington. I am studying Media Arts with an emphasis in Public Relations. I also am receiving a certificate in Applied Leadership and Human Relations. I chose to apply to become an intern for the WCA because I feel that this organization is a place that I feel welcomed in and the values line up with mine. I have had a lot of experience working for other organizations and this is my first time working for a nonprofit so I am very excited to start this journey!

I am graduating in May, and my future goals are to move back to the Pacific Northwest to either live in Camas, Washington or Portland, Oregon. I have always loved event planning, as well as working with children and would want to be able to use those skills as a community relations specialist for a professional sports team. If you meet me at the WCA or come to say hello, ask me about how much I love my hometown, whether it is hiking, any activity outside, my favorite food spots in Portland, or my love for baseball (go Dodgers!)

Raven Sweeny
Philanthropy Intern (BSU)Raven S - Intern Spring 2020 (Philanthropy)

My name is Raven Sweeny and I am currently a senior at Boise State studying Sociology. As well as my studies, I also play Soccer on the women’s Soccer team at BSU.

I was born and raised in Southern California and moved out to Boise for college. I love the work being done at the WCA and I cannot wait to join the team and learn more along the way!

The Philanthropy team is delighted to have Raven join us from now until May in the capacity of Philanthropy Intern. She will be working on a variety of projects including, events, admin support and helping us look at ways to engage with a younger donor base. Raven will also be helping with the development of our ambassador program and some of our new volunteer opportunities and events .
