National Coalition Against Domestic Violence Mourns with Bakersfield, California Community |
Denver, CO / Washington, D.C. — The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) mourns with the Bakersfield, California community and the families and loved ones of the victims, in the wake of yet another mass shooting rooted in domestic violence.”This week we witnessed the after-effects of yet another deadly intersection of firearms and domestic violence, as seen in the Bakersfield mass shooting, where an ultimate act of power and control merged with an abuser’s easy access to firearms We are losing too many lives as a result of this intersection. More communities and families are being devastated by a single person’s need to control! Easy access to firearms must be addressed.”The statistics on the lethal intersection between firearms and domestic are sobering.
The Bakersfield shooting also highlights how entire communities are impacted by domestic violence. Up to 20% of victims killed during an intimate partner homicide are not the abuse victim — for example, family members, friends, neighbors, witnesses and members of law enforcement who may intervene. NCADV has been addressing the lethal intersection between firearms and domestic violence for as a top legislative and policy priority for several years. Its latest effort includes a partnership with the Education Fund to Stop Gun Violence, the Alliance for Gun Responsibility, and the Prosecutors Against Gun Violence have teamed up to launch a new initiative: Disarm Domestic Violence. The Disarm Domestic Violence website, due to launch in October 2018, will allow advocates, gun violence prevention activists, survivors, victims, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and others to research state-specific laws on domestic violence-related protective order firearm removals and take steps to remove guns from armed abusers. ### |
