The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) is preparing for the 30th anniversary of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) this October. Their awareness campaign is titled “Take a Stand.” As I think of that phrase in the context of philanthropy, I think how fortunate our clients are to have so many people in our community taking a stand against domestic abuse and sexual assault. Whether it’s time, talent or treasure, we see hundreds of people every month who want to help the WCA end the cycle of violence and abuse by helping our clients find safety, healing and freedom.
Did you know we have six volunteers who work with our Court Advocates to assist people seeking safety? They are taking a stand. Recently, seven-year-old Lanie made headbands and sold them to raise money to help the children in our shelter heal. Lanie took a stand. Many of our donors, who are also survivors, help support our case management, life skills, and financial literacy programs so other survivors can be free from abuse and create a sustainable income and a safe home for their children. They are all taking a stand – again. They stood up to their abusers and now they are standing up for others who are still finding their voices.
For over 117 years, this organization has been taking a stand against domestic violence, abuse and sexual assault. Our work is only possible thanks to the volunteers and donors who continue to take a stand to help others.
