Self-Help Techniques For Coping With Mental Illness
By Emmie Pombo, National Alliance on Mental Illness
Living with mental illness is not easy. It’s a consistent problem without a clear solution. While treatments like medication and psychotherapy are incredibly helpful, sometimes people experiencing mental health conditions need to do more day-in and day-out to feel good or even just okay.
Some common self-help suggestions people receive are to exercise, meditate and be more present, which are helpful and work for many people. However, other proven methods aren’t mentioned as often. Many of them are quick and simple techniques that can easily be added to daily routines.

Denim Day 2018
Denim Day 2018 was a great success in the Treasure Valley with thousands of residents participating by wearing jeans, denim jackets, or the fabulous one-inch “Ask Me About Denim Day” stickers. In fact, the WCA passed out close to 6,500 stickers and 600 denim ribbons made by awesome volunteers and staff members.
From the campuses of Boise State University to the College of Western Idaho, to Gowen Field and Boise City Hall – citizens joined in to raise awareness about the prevalence of sexual assault and the dangers of victim blaming, and to show their support for victims across the globe. Click here to read about Mayor Bieter proclaiming April 25, 2018, Denim Day in the City of Boise.

Idaho Gives 2018
This past Thursday, May 3, over 200 donors rallied to support the WCA through Idaho Gives. Together, they donated $16,500 and made us eligible to receive an additional $500 “Leaderboard” prize! The funds raised exceeded our goals and hopes! More importantly, this support gives hope to our clients. Because of these donors, our childcare and children’s play therapy will continue to thrive while providing much needed healing for our youngest clients.
Statewide nearly 11,000 donors gave over $1.5 million to 570 nonprofits. It is exciting and humbling to be a part of such a caring and generous community.

This spring, we have had the pleasure of working with a group of Treasure Valley high school students that have a passion for helping the WCA and bringing awareness of teen dating violence to their peers!
These Student Leaders have been meeting twice a month to develop resources for teens, plan awareness activities for their schools, and learn about the dynamics of dating abuse and how to help their peers.
