SCENTSY AWARDS GRANT TO SUPPORT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER PROGRAM
Boise, ID – Scentsy awarded the Women’s and Children’s Alliance (WCA) a grant of $10, 000 to support the WCA’s emergency and transitional domestic violence shelter program.
For people leaving an abusive relationship, safety is often the most important concern. Accordingly, the WCA provides a secure shelter and transitional housing program, in a confidential location with round-the-clock staff assistance, private rooms and common living facilities for women and children fleeing domestic violence.
Women and children residing in the shelter have the option to participate in vast programming options tailored to their individual needs. These may include support groups, financial empowerment, life skills classes, case management, and one-on-one counseling sessions. An on-site, licensed child care is provided for mothers participating in the residential program.
“The National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that domestic violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women and their children. It may also be a contributing factor in the decision to leave, thus the importance of available safe shelter,” said Bev La Chance, Deputy Director of the WCA.
Last fiscal year, the WCA provided 13,197 “safe bed nights” to 179 women and children. Many women staying in the shelter are accompanied by children – 60 percent of those children were under the age of five. For many children in the shelter, it might be the first time that they sleep without the threat of violence in their lives. The safety and security that Scentsy helps provide is a vital resource for the women and children escaping domestic violence.
“Scentsy has been a vital partner in ensuring the sustainability of the WCA’s emergency shelter and transitional housing programs and is once again making a critical contribution to the safety and well-being of the women and children in our community who are traumatized by violence and abuse in their homes,” said La Chance.
All WCA services are provided free-of-charge thanks to the generosity of the community.
