School’s Out: Keeping Kids Healthy and Active

“I’m Bored!” This might be a phrase that every parent is very familiar with, especially when it comes to their child and the start of summer vacation. As a Case Manager at the Women’s and Children’s Alliance, I have assisted my families with getting involved in a variety of activities throughout the year. Those of us that live in the Treasure Valley are incredibly lucky as the valley boasts a large number of free, or nearly free, activities for the entire family throughout the year. As summer vacation approaches I would like to share some of my favorite resources for families in the valley. Below you will find brief overviews of the programs that I would like to highlight and some information about their summer offerings.

Starting Conversations: Riverstone Students
Discussing the issues of domestic abuse and sexual assault can be hard with young people. We do not want to expose youth to that dark, but unfortunately common, aspect of our society. Statistics show that one in three adolescences in the United States will experience abuse from a dating partner. Abuse does not just happen between spouses and it is important that young people understand healthy and unhealthy relationships in order for them to thrive.

Idaho Gives 2016
Thursday, May 5 was a special day in our state: Idaho Gives. Individuals throughout the state came together to honor and support local nonprofits doing great work here in Idaho. This annual event is sponsored by the Idaho Nonprofit Center. You can learn more about Idaho Gives by visiting the website here.

What do you do in your job at the WCA?
I am the go-to person for everything relating to volunteers. I meet with potential volunteers and fill open volunteer positions within the organization. I’m also the go to person for a couple of our major sponsorship programs; Back to School and The Giving Tree.

 Our community is constantly giving back and supporting our clients on their journey to safety, healing and freedom. We would like to highlight just a few special cases from the month of May. Our work is only possible through the support of our community.

Our lists of needed items are updated weekly and always available on our website. New items from this list below can be dropped off at the WCA lobby at 720 W Washington St. M-F from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Box Fans – 5 needed
- Crib (new) – 2 needed
- Crib bedding
- Gift cards: gas, groceries, household items, facility-related items for any $ amount
- Individually Packaged Foods – Granola bars, Fruit snacks, Pretzels, and Personal size: nut packs, cracker packs, cereal packs
- Kinetic Sand (different colors) – 5 packs of each color
- Potty Training Chairs – 6 needed
- Summer Water and Sand Toys
- Twin Comforters – 20 needed
- Vinyl & zippered twin-size mattresses covers – 20 needed
