Controls Who I See = Domestic Abuse
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. During this month, we engage in conversations about the different types of abuse that are often overlooked, yet extraordinarily harmful. These types of abuse are often ignored because they are not physical violence. We launched an awareness campaign that includes newspaper ads, billboards, a social media campaign, and more with messages like “controls who I see = domestic abuse,” “intentionally hurts me = domestic abuse” and “checks my phone =domestic abuse.”Domestic abuse is about power and control. And yes, it does often involve physical violence—but it rarely begins with assault. Emotional and verbal abuse, coercive control, isolation and financial abuse are ways an abuser or predominant aggressor often begins the cycle of power and control.

COMMUNITY LEADERS PROCLAIM OCTOBER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH ACROSS THE TREASURE VALLEY
Many in our community are experiencing the trauma of domestic abuse. Last year, the WCA experienced a 57% increase in the total number of calls to our 24-hour hotlines and an 84% increase in the number of calls related to domestic abuse. On October 1, 2021, we came together with first responders, elected officials and other agencies from across the valley to share information about victim services and recognize first responders’ critical role in our communities.
