Starting over after domestic abuse can be challenging and fraught with self-doubt and fear.  It can be especially hard to create a peaceful new life after living in  an isolating relationship ruled by power and control. While it is difficult, you can ask others for help in order to stay safely be free from violence.

Make a list of people that you feel are supportive and caring and talk to them. You don’t have to tell them everything, but just reach out. Most often you will be surprised how many want to help you. They can help you with the little things that make all the difference,  like watching your children while you go to court, providing transportation, or an empathetic ear that truly hears your words.  When your life has been closed down by another who pays no heed to your thoughts and needs, it can be scary to trust that others really care.  Isolation greatly magnifies fear, but reaching out can be liberating. It allows for you to reawaken once dashed dreams.  A new beginning after abuse is possible – dare to think about the sweet things that you would like in your life.  It’s possible – you can find happiness again.
