Bea Black, Executive Director
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. 1 in 3 teens finds themselves in an abusive relationship, whether that’s sexual, physical, emotional—it’s a horrific statistic. One of the things that we do all year, but particularly during the month of February, is outreach to our junior highs and high schools. We have a presentation that focuses on healthy and unhealthy relationships, and an interactive simulation called, “In Their Shoes,” that allows participants to make decisions acting as a character who is in an unhealthy relationship. Something you can do to support this cause is to wear orange on February 11th to bring attention to Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. You can also check out other activities and events that are listed here in the newsletter to see how you can join in. Help us spread the word. Help us help our young folks understand what a healthy relationship is, and that they deserve nothing but a healthy relationship. Thank you.

Have You Heard About Our Youth REPs?
This diverse group of motivated, kind and collaborative youth are raising awareness for teen dating violence and healthy relationships in a number of ways. From high schools across the Treasure Valley, these teens come together twice a month to develop campaigns, create social media content, plan and organize awareness events for their peers, all while gaining leadership and professional skills. Their Instagram account, @WCAYouthREPs, is the best way to keep track of what they’re up to, especially with February being Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month! If you or a teen you know are interested in becoming a WCA Youth REP for the 2020-2021 school year, we will begin accepting applications in May.

Meet Our Spring Interns!
We are fortunate to have a fantastic group of interns at the WCA this spring working with both the Outreach & Communications and Philanthropy teams. Through these internship opportunities, the WCA is providing students with on-the-job training and educational opportunities that will help them obtain the knowledge and skills for the WCA and similar organizations to consider them as potential candidates for future job openings in the communications, public relations, advertising and other nonprofit fields. We are grateful for to have Melissa, Gabby, Delaney, Alexis, and Raven with the WCA this semester, collaborating with many staff members throughout the organization.
