At the start of this New Year and new decade, we take a moment to reflect on the past decade and all the progress we’ve made towards achieving our vison. We have expanded services in court advocacy, housing, and prevention education. Another point of great excitement is that we have grown our endowment to almost two million dollars, which will help our sustainable funding far into the future.

In this next decade, we want to ensure our community knows that we are here for them. We want to encourage everyone to learn about the services we offer, learn about the signs, and be our partners in addressing these issues. Thank you.

Stalking: Know it. Name it. Stop it.

January is National Stalking Awareness Month. Stalking occurs when someone repeatedly harasses or threatens someone else, causing fear or safety concerns. According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), about 1 in 6 women and 1 in 17 men have experienced stalking in their lifetimes.

These behaviors can come in the form of threatening phone calls, text messages, spying, or showing up at the victim’s home or workplace, and leaving unwanted gifts or cards. Most often, stalking occurs by someone they know or with whom they had an intimate relationship.

Inspired to Give

When Lysi and Scott Bishop started a fundraiser for the WCA through the Cauze app, they couldn’t have known what an impact it would make. Cauze, “lets you give to any charity you care about the moment you’re inspired to do so” (cauze.com). This app allows friends, peers, etc. to follow each other and see which nonprofits they’re donating to and get involved themselves.

2020 PSA Contest!

February is nationally recognized as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner. However, only 33% of teens who were in a violent relationship ever told anyone about the abuse (loveisrespect.org).

To bring light to this issue that affects so many young people in our community, the WCA hosts an annual PSA Contest to get young people talking and thinking about their relationships. These PSAs are intended to give teens the opportunity to inform their peers about what abusive relationships look like, the difference between unhealthy and healthy relationships, and the resources available to anyone who is struggling or has questions.
