What is Stalking?

While most stalking is committed by someone known to the victim, such as an ex-partner or acquaintance, some victims are stalked by strangers. Stalking can get more serious over time and can happen to anyone regardless of race, culture, gender identity, age, or sexual orientation. Approximately 15% of women and 6% of men in the United States have experienced stalking. (CDC, 2014) Stalking is most common in the young adult age demographic (18-25 years old), but can occur anytime in one’s life.

Idaho Stalking/Threats Protection Order Statute

There are many forms of abuse that a person may experience over the course of an unhealthy relationship. Typically, these different forms of abuse are used to try and maintain power and control over the other person. If someone chooses to end the relationship it is not a guarantee that the abuse will stop, which is where we often see a shift in abusive tactics and we often see abusers use different forms of stalking to try and continue to exhibit power and control over the other person. In Idaho, if someone is experiencing certain stalking behaviors there is a way to utilize the court system for certain forms of safety and relief, which can be done by filing a civil protection order.

Holiday Program Success
Every year at the WCA we are blessed with an outpouring of community support during the holidays through our three holiday programs: Holiday Sponsorship Program, Giving Tree and City Santa. In 2020, we saw a stark increase in the need for our services since the global pandemic began. However, our generous community stepped up, even more, to help when home is not safe for all.

WCA Book Club

The WCA/Rediscovered Books Women’s Voices Book Club book selection will be “rough house” – the beautiful and heartbreaking memoir by Tina Ontiveros about Tina’s life growing up in turmoil with an abusive father in the logging towns & trailer parks of the Pacific Northwest…struggling with poverty, generational trauma… “The story of violent men and societal restrictions, of children not always chosen and frequently raised alone.” Tina will be leading the book club. The book club is free of charge and is open to everyone. It is via zoom from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm on January 21.
