Every year during the month of July we are reminded of the many liberties and freedoms we have been awarded in this country, but unfortunately not everyone lives every day feeling like they are free. The word freedom frequently involves conversations around freedom of speech, the ability to vote, or one’s right to religious liberty. Not often do those conversations delve into the deeper meaning of freedom.
July is the month to say goodbye to the Jesuit Volunteer AmeriCorps Members who have served at the WCA for the past year, Megan Skinner and Siobhan O’Carroll.
As the Community Support Specialist, Megan recruited and helped retain WCA volunteers, supported shelter families with in-kind donation drives, and provided monthly tours of the WCA facility to the public. For Megan, building relationships with volunteers was the most rewarding aspect of her service.
WCA Volunteer Earns Jefferson Award for Community Service
Our own WCA Child Care volunteer of seven years, Dahn Lyttle, was honored as the May recipient of Idaho’s Jefferson Award for Public Service, a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public volunteerism in America.
As a WCA employee in 2011, Katherine Johnson began the Ambassador program. Now a Senior Account Manager at Stoltz, she volunteers her time each month to facilitate Ambassador 101.
A WCA Ambassador is someone who has at least ten guests attend our “If These Walls Could Talk” tour. They can attend the regularly-scheduled tours that take place twice per month, host a private tour, or host a “Tour in a Box” at their home or work.
Freedom. When I think of freedom here is what comes to mind: having choices, making decisions, taking actions, following your interests, being yourself, saying what you feel or think about something without someone telling you to be quiet, and questioning everything you say and do.

The WCA was honored to be chosen as the Tips for Charity recipients for June at the Alive After Five Summer Concert Series. All tips from beer and wine sales were donated to the WCA with the help of incredible groups of volunteers each week. Volunteers poured and served beverages for three hours each Wednesday last month. They also amped up the crowd by ringing purple cowbells for each tip they received.
Our community is constantly giving back and supporting our clients on their journey to safety, healing and freedom. We would like to highlight just a few special cases that have happened recently.

The Philanthropy Files

As I think about freedom, I am reminded of the story of one of our former clients. I’ll call her Alia (not her real name). As a thank you gift to the WCA staff, Alia made a feast and brought it to our downtown location. As I was enjoying her delicious food and thoughtfulness, I reflected on her journey.
Alia had come to the WCA about six months prior with only her children and the clothes on their backs.
