From Survivor to Service
WCA Volunteer Retires after 21 Years
“My life started over at 60,” says Joan Caldwell, mother of two, retired teacher and WCA volunteer for more than 20 years. In 1997, Joan left her abusive marriage of 36 years and turned to the WCA for help. After she received our services, she began volunteering for the WCA and has just retired from her volunteer duties at the age of 83. This is her story.

Abuse in the LGBTQIA+ Community
June is the month of Pride, which is an LGBTQIA+ tradition of honoring those before us, celebrating our present, and actively creating a better world and future. Pride is about community, and also about serving that community. It marks the anniversary of Stonewall in 1969 which was lead primarily by two trans women of color: Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. They were fighting against the assault and abuse of LGBT people in their community. Marsha and Sylvia were civil rights activists throughout their lives, including creating STAR, an organization dedicated to helping young, homeless trans women of color.

New Garden Beds
The WCA shelter campus recently gained a new addition. Due to a kind donation from Edwards Greenhouse and the gardening skills of one of the WCA’s Client Advocates, Nicole Hannah, the shelter campus now has beautiful garden beds. Nicole and a shelter resident planted tomatoes, herbs, peppers, berries, squash and an assortment of other veggies. Already some deer have come to check out the buffet! Soon there will be a mesh fence up to keep them out, so the residents will be able to enjoy all the fruits and veggies.

Corporate Pillar Spotlight: St. Luke’s
St. Luke’s Health System’s extraordinary decades-long Corporate Pillars support is a reason for much appreciation and gratitude from us here at the Women’s & Children’s Alliance. St. Luke’s goal to create healthier communities by building stronger partnerships is evident in their continued Corporate Pillar support. St. Luke’s Health System’s employees, present and past, are tremendous volunteers for WCA events and projects, including providing much needed bedding for our new Laura’s Home shelter.

Alive After Five 2018
The WCA is honored to be the featured charity for the Tips for Charity program during Alive After Five for the month of June. Each Wednesday night at the Boise Grove Plaza, tips earned from beer and wine sales go directly toward supporting our mission of safety, healing, and freedom from domestic abuse and sexual assault. In 2017, the WCA made almost $5,000 with the tremendous help of 24 WCA volunteers pouring beer and wine each Wednesday in July. Look for those ringing cowbells at the beer tent and drop by to say hello to us on June 13, 20, and 27!
