It is November and I cannot shake the overwhelming feeling of gratefulness. We have so much to be grateful for here at the WCA. Thanks to the support of our community, we have been there for the 14 emergency shelter intakes and the 91% increase in calls to our 24-hour hotline since the start of 2020. We are here thanks to the support of our community. We wish you safety, health, and thanks.

Introducing: Dr. Beronica Salazar
I am Dr. Beronica Salazar, the Program Director at the WCA. I am a licensed clinical professional counselor, a Nationally Certified Counselor, an Approved Clinical Supervisor from the Center for Credentialing and Education and a state of Idaho board approved supervisor. My clinical background in not-for-profit organizations has focused on providing services to diverse and underserved populations. Much of my clinical experience has included working with trauma survivors and high-risk clients (youth and adults) at risk of suicide. My sense of responsibility for desiring to improve treatment accessibility for all motivates me to build meaningful partnerships and develop new ways to support staff to improve service delivery.

The Prevention Perspective
When we think about prevention, it’s important to recognize that violence doesn’t exist in a vacuum; that is to say, it doesn’t “just happen”. Often violence victimization and perpetration are attributed to individual factors, and while these can play a part, focusing solely on these individual factors, unfortunately, has led to unintended harmful consequences for survivors. We see this play out in many ways in our society, for example giving girls tips to stay safe (don’t set your drink down at a party, carry your keys between your fingers walking to your car at night, don’t wear clothing deemed “too sexy” or revealing, etc.).

Our community is constantly giving back and supporting our clients on their journey to safety, healing and freedom. Especially during these times, our work is only possible through the support of our community.
We would like to highlight just a few special cases that have happened recently.

Survivor Story
I wouldn’t call myself a victim of domestic violence, I call myself a fighter, a survivor.
I WAS a victim. Today I am sharing my story with the hope that I can help at least one person to seek help. To be a fighter, to be a survivor.
I close my eyes and can still clearly see his facial expressions and anger in his eyes. I can see his fists, feel his breath, and hear his teeth grinding.
If I close my eyes long enough, I can hear his tone of voice and it takes me back to the darkest times of my life.
It would come in waves, there were good times where I was happy, we were happy. Times I had convinced myself that there was nothing wrong in hopes that it would stay somewhat good. It never lasted.
