October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. While we have had to move our events to a virtual environment, we are still working hard to create conversations and awareness on domestic abuse. This conversation is more important than ever. Home is not safe for everyone. We encourage you to share our information with others.

It’s DVAM: Why Do We Start Conversations?

Last week, we had the honor and privilege joining leaders from across the valley to proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In Boise, Eagle, Garden City, Kuna, Meridian and Star—the Mayors each made official proclamations declaring it officially DVAM for their cities and towns and the Ada County Commissioners signed an official proclamation for the county as well. Why? Because for survivors, it is crucial we stand together in support. For those in unhealthy and dangerous situations, it is absolutely critical they know we are here for them; that they know there is help, there is hope. From the elected officials in their communities to the law enforcement and first responders taking care of their neighborhoods and the service providers like the WCA, is more important now during these trying times to let our friends, family members and those we may soon meet to know that we are here for them.

As the WCA celebrates 110 years of changing lives, we would like to invite all of our community to watch virtually at one of three watch parties across a 24-hour day of impact. The event will be an opportunity to learn more about the WCA’s mission of safety, healing and freedom from domestic abuse and sexual assault and is a rare opportunity to hear first-hand from our courageous clients as they share their healing journeys.

The Prevention Perspective

 At the WCA, we often talk about breaking the cycle of abuse. This cycle can refer to the phases an abusive relationship may go through, but the cycle of abuse can also be generational, creating harmful ripple effects that can impact individuals long after the initial abuse. According to the CDC, exposure to violence in childhood increases the risks of future violence victimization and perpetration. While the WCA’s mission of safety, healing and freedom is essential to supporting survivors, we must also work to break the generational cycle of violence to ensure that our vision of a community where everyone thrives in safe, healthy relationships can be a reality for all. This is where our Prevention Program comes in!

The Clothesline Project 2020

Since 1998, the WCA has organized a local display of the Clothesline Project for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Because of COVID-19, we were unable to send out displays. We wanted a way to honor survivors of domestic abuse so we created the 2020 virtual clothesline project…
