burrell-dianaSeeds of Philanthropy in today’s youth are growing. It is not uncommon for children to find ways to give to the WCA, and other organizations. One of my favorite examples is a wonderful boy who, for his sixth birthday, asked his friends to bring unwrapped presents for the children living at Serena’s House. A more recent example is nine year-old Aiden who gave us a nice donation a few weeks ago – read more about him in the Donor Spotlight.

Have you heard of the “philanthroteens?” These are today’s teenagers who are donating their time, talent and treasure to causes they care about. Research shows that 32% of teens have made financial contributions to a charity and over 26% volunteer. Recently we met Sam who gathered hundreds of bottles of dish soap, laundry detergent, hand sanitizers and other items to benefit the WCA shelter clients and our downtown facility. We also have remarkable teen volunteers and interns who help us with everything from sorting items in the Thrift Shop to community outreach. These kids, known as “Generation Z,” are already having a big impact on their communities.

I want to thank all of you amazing parents and teachers who are encouraging children to get involved and make a positive difference in the lives of others. The seeds you are planting now will help all of us in the nonprofit sector achieve our missions and visions.

If the young people in your lives are looking for something to get involved with now, perhaps they would consider helping with our diaper drive  during the month of March. Our clients are in need of diapers, pull-ups and wipes.
