A Community of Giving

The holiday season is upon us and it calls for us to reflect on what is truly important in our lives. If you turn on your television during this season you will find ads describing that next amazing gift that you are going to want to put on your wish-list. While unwrapping these gifts can be a great experience, we have found at the Women’s and Children’s Alliance that giving back can be just as rewarding, or more so, than receiving.  This time of year is about more than our individual wants; it is about our community.

Students Stand up to Domestic Abuse

On Friday, October 9th a group of students gathered in Renaissance High School- all of them decked out in purple. Led by Cheyenne Quilter, Renaissance High School Student Council member and WCA Student Champion, the students had spent the week collecting donations and raising awareness of domestic abuse.

Survivor Story

My name is Tara Hamilton-Lloyd. I am a former client of the WCA, and I am now so very fortunate to be an ambassador and on occasion I get to share some of my story with others.

Today, I’m breaking some news to everyone; sadly, we cannot make other people’s life decisions for them. We all know this. But yet we try so desperately to impart our wisdom onto others, hoping that it will enact change and being disappointed when we realize our efforts are for naught. The good news is that the last part of that isn’t necessarily true; it’s just that change doesn’t always look the way we think it will. Words born out of kindness and concern aren’t always cast aside. Sometimes larger change emerges from a build-up of small moments. The summation of those moments is the fuel that allows people to fly if and when they are ready.

Donor Spotlight:  Mrs. Skinner’s Third Grade Class
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) the generosity of our community was demonstrated in countless ways. We want to thank all of these fabulous donors who give us their time, talent, and treasure not only in October, but throughout the year. Every single member of our community has the ability to change lives and the students from Mrs. Skinner’s third grade class at St. Joe’s discovered that this month.

What do you do in your volunteer role at the WCA?

I volunteer to support the great  front desk staff during a peak time on Wednesday evenings.

Supporting Our Clients

Last month we had some amazing community support to help us raise funds and awareness during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Click on the links below for details on some of the amazing things people in the Treasure Valley made happen last month!

Corporate Pillar Spotlight: The E.W. Scripps Company

During this time of giving thanks we would like to highlight one of our fabulous corporate pillars: The E.W. Scripps Company. Earlier this year, E.W. Scripps acquired the Journal Broadcast Group stations here in Idaho. This included the KIVI 6 On Your Side television station and 94.9 The River FM radio station. Dan McColly, the Creative Services Director at KIVI-TV for E.W. Scripps, states that “While community has always been woven into the fabric of what we do, we are pleased that Scripps has a longstanding nationwide reputation of ‘doing well by doing good.’  This, together with Scripps’ deep commitment to comprehensive, responsible journalism will only serve to expand our ability to inform, enlighten and support families living in southwest Idaho.”

How can I help?

Words I love to hear, because I always have an answer:  Become an Ambassador! So what does an Ambassador do, and why is it so important? An Ambassador is someone who is passionate about our mission, and wants everyone in our community to know about the WCA.

From Bev’s Desk

Bev La Chance, Deputy Director
The WCA owes a million thank yous to a community whose “open heart” policy has allowed the agency to touch so many lives, in so many ways. Generosity is measured in multiple ways with each gesture creating a mass of collective support that strengthens the agency’s mission-driven foundation that blossoms through an innovative client-centered approach that is abloom with opportunity.
