 Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is officially Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) in Boise. Boise Mayor David Bieter joined local and national officials in proclaiming October as DVAM in Boise on October 1st. Throughout the month we are partnering with local organizations and supporters to bring awareness to how this issue impacts our community.

Rem bering SueB
The sixth annual SueB 5K Walk/Run and Kids’ race was held on October 4, 2015, in Julia Davis Park. The weather was warm and the sun was shining while more than 240 participated in this year’s festivities. Through sponsorships, donations, and registrations, more than $25,000 was raised for the SueB Endowment Fund at the WCA, to provide safety, freedom and healing for those impacted by domestic abuse on our community.
The annual event is presented by the WCA and the Employees of the Ada County Paramedics Association and held in memory of Susan Elaine Brubaker Newby (SueB). Sue died in 2008 during a mysterious horseback riding incident. After her death, family and friends realized that SueB – her nickname – was likely in an abusive marriage. Sue’s sister, Marjory Sente, and friends, Leslie Hampe and Teresa Andrew, turned to the WCA as a way to honor Sue’s life and increase awareness about domestic violence.

Building Partnerships
In 2014, The Women’s and Children’s Alliance (WCA) heard about a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with Deseret Industries and we knew immediately, that we could not pass on the opportunity to provide better services to our clients. We met Clark Meredith and his team to discuss the Community Grant and how it could benefit the clients we serve.
 The Community Grant gives the WCA an opportunity to provide vouchers to clients in order for them to purchase furniture and merchandise from the Deseret Industries. When clients move out of the shelter they work with their Case Manager to obtain furniture for their new “forever home.” The Deseret Industries makes that possible for so many families. In 2015, we were able to provide vouchers to eleven families that transitioned out of the shelter and we are happy to announce that we have been approved for another grant this year.

I am a court advocate as well as in the past being a speaker and my story is shared in the fundraising DVD that have been shown to companies.

Corporate Pillar Spotlight: Lamar Advertising
 We have some great Corporate Pillars that help us throughout the year in providing safety, healing and freedom to survivors. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and we would like to highlight a Corporate Pillar who especially helps our efforts to bring this issue to forefront of community conversation.
Lamar of Idaho is the largest Out of Home Advertising Company in the state and is based out of Boise. They have four satellite offices in Lewiston, Twin Falls, Pocatello and Idaho Falls. Lamar of Idaho operates over 1,200 billboard faces in Idaho, Northern Nevada, Eastern Oregon and Eastern Washington. Their inventory consists of static posters and bulletins as well as digital poster and bulletin formats for providing creative ways to reach the public.

Launching a Capital Campaign: Hope Needs Space to Grow
It is an exciting time at the Women’s and Children’s Alliance. We have just launched a $1.4 million capital campaign to build a transitional housing unit next to our existing secure shelter for victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. We currently have a 120-day voluntary residential shelter program, one 24-hour emergency shelter room and four transitional housing rooms. Last year, 176 women and children stayed with us for 9,583 “safe bed nights”. We anticipate that this number will continue to increase in the coming years.

As I was growing up I remember very clearly my parents admonition to “mind my own business” and “don’t stare – it’s rude”! Good manners were very important to them and since I wanted to please them they were important to me as well. Many of you probably remember being told the same thing.
