Emily Headshot“Let our New Year’s resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word.” – Goran Persson

With the New Year comes our newest column: The Compassion Project. In the last weeks of December we spent time highlighting the generosity, kindness, and compassion of our community. If you search the hashtag  #WhatCompassionAccomplishes on our Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, you can see these heartwarming stories. Thank you to those of you who participated.

Throughout the year, this column will feature the various ways to have compassion for others, for our specific organization, and for yourself – an underrated yet crucial component to fostering a healthy community. The word compassion is a noun and is perhaps best defined by its synonyms; empathy, care, concern, warmth, love, tolerance, kindness, humanity, and charity. Compassion’s antonyms: indifference and cruelty, have no place within our walls here at the WCA. We know how much good there is in the world, we get to see it every day. In people like you, our supporters and friends, in our fellow staff members, our volunteers, our Ambassadors. And finally in our clients and their children, who fight for a new life for themselves filled with care, concern, and love.

It is my pleasure to be able to bring this theme of compassion into 2017 for our readers.  I have worked for the Women’s and Children’s Alliance for just over three years. In my time here I have learned the same lesson again and again: transformation is possible. Individually, organization-wide, community-wide, and therefore, worldwide. Let us be the ones who collectively transform our world by allowing compassion lead our actions above all else.
