This September marks the 30th anniversary of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). First observed in October 1987, Domestic Violence Awareness Month is focused on three key themes: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the “Day of Unity” held in October 1981, conceived of by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence to connect advocates across the country in their mission to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity is still celebrated on the first Monday of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As we at the WCA work to unify our community against domestic violence, we hope you will join us in some of the opportunities to raise awareness this October. Here are just a few activities you can participate in during October to recognize this special anniversary of Domestic Violence Awareness Month:
Please join us this October in the national effort to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month so that we can say #NoMore to domestic abuse and create a healthy community for all of us! Find out more about WCA’s DVAM 2017 activities and get involved today!
