burrell-dianaSustainable funding is something all nonprofits strive for. Developing consistent streams of income helps ensure that clients will continue to receive much needed services regardless of recessions or changing federal funding landscapes. As 30,000 people a year move to the Treasure Valley the need for the WCA’s services will only increase. One of the ways the WCA is working to ensure that we will be here to provide safety, healing and freedom from domestic abuse and sexual assault for future generations is by growing our board directed endowment fund.

We recently crossed the $1 million mark in our endowment fund, thanks in large part to the SueB Memorial 5K/10K Run/Walk that was held on October 1 this year. For eight years, the SueB Memorial run has helped raise awareness about domestic abuse and generated over $145,000 for our endowment fund. Susan Newby, SueB to her friends and family, died in a mysterious accident. Following Sue’s death, her family, friends and investigators believed Sue was in an abusive marriage and that her death was not an accident.

Sue was a well educated, successful, smart, beautiful, loving woman. She was the last person you might suspect to be in an abusive marriage. Sue’s family and friends are driven to help women get out of abusive relationships before it’s too late. “Don’t wait until your sister, daughter or mother is a victim of domestic abuse or sexual assault,” Marj Sente, Sue’s sister, said. “Step forward now and make an investment in the WCA to raise awareness about domestic violence.”

Thanks to the SueB Memorial Run and individual donors who want the WCA’s programs to last for generations, we were able to withdraw $30,000 from the fund this year without depleting the principle. That’s the equivalent of 300 healing sessions for children with our Registered Play Therapists. Our long term goal for the endowment fund is to grow it by $1 million per year for ten years. A $10 million endowment fund will allow us to withdraw $500,000 a year – 20% of our current operating budget.

Donors can contribute to the endowment now or through bequests and planned giving. Please contact me for more information about the endowment fund and what it can make possible, [email protected] or 208-343-3688 ext. 0282.

Sue left this world too soon. Please help us keep that from happening to someone else in the future.
