Thoughts on Courage and Independence

24-Hour Domestic Violence Hotline: 208.343.7025 24-hour Rape Crisis Hotline: 208.345.7273 (RAPE)

As we prepare to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day, I wish for you and your family and friends a safe and healthy 4th of July. I also wish for you a time of quiet reflection on what this holiday means to you.

When I think of the sacrifices made, the sheer courage and commitment it took by so many brave men, women and children–and the lives lost in order for the colonies to gain their independence, I can’t help but also reflect on the Declaration of Independence.

The concepts introduced in the Declaration were so radical for the times . .  yet still so very relevant today: all are created equal, that all have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit happiness, people have rights that cannot be taken away and that Individuals have a civic duty to defend these rights for themselves and others. The United States Declaration of Independence continues to inspire people around the world to fight for freedom and equality.

My wish on this particular celebration of the birth of our nation is that we all commit to doing everything we can every day, both personally and professionally, to live up to these ideals.

I am continually humbled when I witness the incredible courage of those we serve. Often, when they come through our doors seeking help, freedom and independence seem unattainable. As they utilize our tools and services, they begin to regain a sense of freedom and independence, giving them hope while on their journey to a life free from abuse.

Through the WCA’s case management, our clients are connected with life skills, job training programs, housing assistance, financial empowerment and other programming vital to finding a life free from abuse. Learning personal advocacy skills and regaining a sense of self can be the most freeing to someone who has been in an abusive relationship.

I am humbled by the individuals we serve and am grateful for the work I am privileged to do because of the freedoms I am allowed.

Thank you for helping make it all possible.
