Setting Personal Boundaries

Boundaries are an abstract concept. Boundaries can be emotional and physical and can change over time. Boundaries are part of every relationship, including romantic, platonic, workplace and familial relationships. They are a healthy and normal part of every relationship. In order for any relationship to be successful some boundaries need to be established, whether it by naturally evolving or through conversation and mutual understanding.

Boundaries are different limits someone sets for themselves in a relationship. When those limits are crossed, a person may feel uncomfortable or may even become upset.

SueB—the Person, the Event, the Endowment

A word frequently has multiple meanings and can bring to mind different images. SueB is one of those words for me.

The Person

Eleven years ago, when I lost my sister Susan B. Newby, I was devastated by the tragedy of losing her. One never expects to lose a younger sister, especially in a mysterious and absolutely unexplainable accident that occurred while she was riding horseback with her husband.

I soon learned that a couple of Sue’s friends called her SueB from the years she played soccer with them, and they wanted to do something in her memory. We planted trees, but that was not enough. So Leslie Hempe, Teresa Andrew and I organized the first SueB Memorial Stroll in 2010 with the proceeds to benefit the WCA.

Mandela Fellows Visit the WCA

The Mandela Washington Fellows are an elite group of young professionals from across Africa.This year Boise State hosted 25 fellows for about six weeks. The group networked with local government and civic agencies. The Boise Weekly did an in-depth spread about the Fellows in their July edition.

We were pleased to host the Mandela Washington Fellows for a presentation and volunteer project while talking about domestic violence and sexual assault. Domestic violence and sexual assault are global pandemics affecting millions of people across the globe.

Having discussions with people from other cultures about domestic abuse and sexual assault is important to build a better understanding about this global crisis.

Corporate Pillar Spotlight: Damsel in Defense

Damsel in Defense is honored to partner with the WCA and be recognized as a Corporate Pillar to this organization. Our mission is to equip, empower, and educate women to protect themselves and their families, and the WCA’s focus on impacting the area of domestic abuse and sexual assault aligns perfectly with this mission.

Damsel joined the WCA in our vision of a community where individuals thrive in safe, healthy relationships in 2012. In that time, they have contributed over $60,000 in funding and many important in-kind items for our clients. In the last seven fiscal years, the WCA has provided 71,065 safe bed nights for women and children, 19,165 counseling sessions and answered 19,165 calls to our 24-hour domestic violence and sexual assault hotlines.

In the simplest terms, a boundary is what’s okay or not okay. Often when I’m speaking with young people about boundaries, they say things like “it’s drawing a line someone shouldn’t cross”, or “boundaries are telling someone what not to do”. Rather than framing boundaries as a way to keep other people out, I try to turn the discussion to how boundaries are a tool to keep us safe and secure in our relationships. For example, rather than saying “You need to give me some space”, saying “I need time for myself to feel my best in this relationship.”

In 2015, Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts and her staff issued a challenge to Ada County Sheriff Stephen Bartlett and the Ada County Sheriff Employees’ Association to face off on the softball diamond. This year marks the fifth annual tournament, and they are joined by the employees of the Ada County Paramedics, St. Luke’s and Saint Alphonus and Boise Fire Department.

There will be a raffle with prizes including a Traeger grill, concert tickets, restaurant gift cards and more! All proceeds raised benefit client services for at the WCA.
