Our school outreach makes a difference

A client experience story from the WCA’s Crisis Case Manager:

I had a client call asking about resources, because her kids had talked to someone from the WCA at their school, and then they came home and staged (in her words) “an intervention.” It sounded like she was separated from the abuser – but still in contact. I got the impression the abuser was the children’s father or at least had been in their lives for some time. She called our domestic abuse hotline the next day, and I answered. She and I talked about therapy and support options available to her through the WCA including counseling services and our weekly RAP support group. When I told her that counseling runs on a waitlist, she said she didn’t mind waiting, because she was already looking into the EAP (Employee Assistance Program) offered through her employer. It was a really nice call to get because so few kids actually talk to their parents about the abuse they see, and even fewer parents listen. It is really great to know that our outreach and prevention efforts in the community are having an impact, something we don’t always get to hear—the positive outcomes.
