Moving into the New Year with Hope

By Shayla DeVisser, WCA Residential Operations Manager

With the holiday season behind us we would like to take this time to reflect on the extremely generous and caring community we live in. For so many of our residents the holidays are a stressful time and this community steps up every year to ensure that the residents at the WCA are taken care of, this year was no exception.

During Thanksgiving we had a very kind donation from CenturyLink that meant so much to the resident and their children. They donated a 22-pound turkey with all the fixings.

Staff Spotlight: Meet Natalie

 Natalie Hale Monro, Victim Advocate

What do you do in your job at the WCA?

I do one-on-one safety planning appointments, civil protection order assistance, and I specialize in safety planning with technology.
How long have you been with the WCA?

I have worked as a Victim Advocate for a year, and I worked as a Client Advocate for 6 months prior to that.

Corporate Pillar Spotlight

Norco has been a great supporter of the WCA as a Partner in Freedom Corporate Pillars sponsor. In addition to the corporate support, the employees of several local offices of the company have come together time and time again to generously support our shelter operations, our child care program and our clients through programs like the annual Giving Tree, Back to School and Christmas sponsorships.

Nurturing Parents Group
 WCA Announces Nurturing Parent Group

Have you ever wished that your child would come with an owner’s manual?  Childhood is an exciting time of exploration and wonder. It is also a time of learning how to form relationships. In order for children to learn how to create healthy relationships it is important for parents to understand how to teach empathy and respect.  The Nurturing Parenting program is a great way to find help and support in teaching the next generation healthy family values.

Bank of America Grant

The Women’s and Children’s Alliance has been awarded a grant of $5,000 from the Bank of America Foundation. The funds will be used to maintain the viability of the WCA’s secure shelters, which are critical to the safety and well-being of victims of domestic and/or sexual violence.

Leaving an abusive relationship is often a high-risk decision.

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Sarah

Sarah Wolfe, Jesuit Volunteer Client Advocate

What do you do in your job at the WCA?

I am a Jesuit Volunteer (JV) serving at the WCA for one year as a Client Advocate. As a CA, I split my time at the Crisis Center, where I answer our Crisis Hotline and meet with community members interested in our services, and working at our 120-day residential shelter.

Before the First Date: Is There a Violent Past?

*DISCLAIMER: While we love the content of this article, we do want to point out that although this particular author uses gender specific pronouns, domestic abuse, violence, and sexual assault happens to both males and females and appears in all types of relationships*

From domesticshelter.org

Thanks to the Internet, you don’t have to be a private investigator to do a little sleuthing before a first date. Who hasn’t Googled the name of a potential suitor just to see what comes up? After all, a girl can never be too careful nowadays.

Concerts for Cause 2014

The 2014 Concert for Cause, benefiting the WCA and sponsored by  94.9 The River and The Knitting Factory, was phenomenal. In actuality, it was three Concerts for Cause; the fabulous band Spoon on December 9th, an acoustic concert by Scars on 45 on December 14th at Bodovino, and the great  Billy Idol on the evening of December 14th.

Close to $40,000 was raised for the WCA from live and silent auctions, sales of raffle tickets, and a very special silent auction at The Record Exchange on December 8th.

Supporting Our Clients This past holiday season was a true testimony to what an amazing community we live in! The amount of support that was offered to our clients was truly inspirational. One group we would like to say a special thank you to is The Journey– A Church for the Spiritually Curious. The Journey hosted a concert and Christmas light show with proceeds benefitting the WCA clients! Not only was the light show spectacular, but the performance by renowned singer Judy Pancoast was incredible. Thank you so much for your amazing and generous support!More…

Volunteer Update

By Tami Fisher, WCA Volunteer Coordinator

Thank you to all who volunteered in 2014! The WCA had over 1,500 volunteers give a little more than 11,000 hours of their time throughout last year. The WCA could not do all that we do in our community without the help of generous volunteers who give so freely of their time.

Thank you!

Bea Black, Executive Director

Well – It’s January again!  That means not only a new month, but also a new year.  While we can always “start over” on any given day – it seems that there is more of a focus on this as we begin the new year.  There is more talk about setting goals, about starting diets, beginning a new exercise regimen, making more time for family and friends – you name it, it is on somebody’s “list”!

Susan Says

Susan Kelley, Development Director

One in Four. You may have heard this before. One in four women will experience domestic abuse at some point in her life. Here at the WCA we offer two on-site tours every month, and we also have a “tour in a box” that we take out into the community-to businesses, homes, churches-anywhere someone wants to spread the word about the WCA.

From Bev’s Desk

Bev La Chance, Deputy Director

The holiday season is over, yet I cannot help but reflect on a number of “special moments” that were truly representative of our caring and compassionate community. There was the young girl who celebrated her birthday by having her friends bring unwrapped toys to her party which she then donated to the children living in the WCA shelter.
