Maggie B. - CC InternMaggie Burkett, Client Advocate/Case Manager Intern

What do you do in your job at the WCA?

I am a first year master social work intern from Boise State University and currently I am working as a case manager. I work to advocate for and empower clients through achieving their goals and increasing their self-sufficiency. Some goals might include, finding a safe and affordable place to live, attaining employment, going back to school, and/or receiving medical care.

How long have you been with the WCA?

I have been interning at the WCA since September 2014.

Where did you work prior to joining the WCA team?

Before joining the WCA I was a program assistant at the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare for both the Sexual Violence Prevention Program and the Physical Activity and Nutrition Program. I also had the opportunity to volunteer in Kenya, Africa building fresh-water filtration systems and assisting HIV/AIDS support groups with income-generating projects.

What do you find most rewarding about your work at the WCA?

There are many things I find rewarding about working at the WCA! One of the most rewarding aspects of this job is witnessing the growth our clients achieve. Their smile and increased sense of confidence is the best! In addition, I find it extremely rewarding to be a part of such a caring and professional team that has established a very supportive environment for me to learn and grow professionally. Thank you!

How have you changed or grown as a person through your work here?

Through my work here I have become more aware of the systemic impacts of domestic violence and sexual assault on individuals, families, and our community as well as the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness in our community. I have grown as an advocate for women and children and my passion for this work continues to grow both professionally and personally.

Is there a memorable moment or story that you’d like to share that you have experienced at the WCA?

I feel that every day the dedicated staff at the WCA is helping to bring positive change into the lives of many individuals and families throughout the Boise community! I am thankful and proud that I can be a part of this organization and do my part to make a difference and say #NoMore to domestic violence and sexual assault.
