IDAHO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GRANT SUPPORTS FINANCIAL LITERACY FOR DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS
Boise, ID – The Women’s and Children’s Alliance (WCA) has been awarded a grant of $2,500 from the Peaceful Settlements Foundation Fund, the Unrestricted Southwestern Region Fund, and the Walter and Leona Dufresne Fund in the Idaho Community Foundation. The funds will be used to provide financial literacy education, through the Treasure Valley Economic Action Program (TVEAP) to survivors of domestic violence through a safety-centered curriculum that is delivered to clients referred through community collaborators.
The WCA is the lead agency for TVEAP, which began in 2010 as a collaborative effort of six valley agencies. The curriculum is called Realizing Your Economic Action Plan, or REAP, which is taught by two Financial Literacy Educators employed through the WCA. More than 927 women have participated in the classes and 85 percent have graduated.
“Financial abuse is a powerful method of keeping a survivor trapped in an abusive relationship,” says Bev La Chance, WCA Deputy Director. “TVEAP strives to empower women to achieve financial independence and self-determination through education and advocacy.”
In addition to financial literacy education, the WCA offers counseling services, safe shelter, case management, court advocacy, life skills education and a variety of other integrated services and programs to women, men and children victimized by abuse.
