National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM). Beyond giving us an opportunity to highlight this very serious and common issue, TDVAM also allows the WCA to highlight a more positive topic: the importance of teaching, modeling and understanding healthy relationships.
Healthier relationships between young people improve their own lives and ultimately build healthier and stronger families, schools, and communities. TDVAM offers some great opportunities to start having these conversations. While it might seem obvious to you, unfortunately many young people do not truly understand what a healthy relationship.

Capital Campaign: Hope Needs Space to Grow!
Finding safe, affordable housing has become increasingly difficult for many in the Treasure Valley, including WCA clients looking to transition out of the shelter with their children. In response to this growing need, last year the WCA Board decided to embark on a Capital Campaign to add a new building at our shelter campus and expand the transitional housing resources available for clients. By increasing the number of rooms available, we will be able to provide safe shelter to those needing extra time to find appropriate housing once they are ready to leave our emergency shelter.

The WCA offers multiple groups for residential and community clients. Groups are often an essential part of the healing process for many of our clients and can be a good support for clients receiving other services such as case management, trauma therapy, court advocacy or financial literacy.
One of the challenging parts of abuse is overcoming the secrecy.

Donor Spotlight: Timberline Drama Club
In January we received a very special donation from a group of students who are passionate about being the change in their community and engaging in conversations. We were able to talk to one of the student leaders about their donation. The WCA gives a huge thank you to the students of the Timberline Drama Club for demonstrating to us how we can all make a difference in our community.

Timberline Drama Club, better known as Drama Squad raised $400 in our annual fundraiser performance known as the Holiday Coffee House. A “coffee house” is an improvisation show in a coffee house-like setting that is completely run by the students.

Volunteer Spotlight: Jaeda Reed
What do you do in your volunteer role at the WCA?
My role as a volunteer varies; I typically help with whatever is needed. For example, if someone is needed to clean they can call me. Or if there’s an event going on I am happy to jump in and help with whatever I can. Overall I’m there to help with anything and everything that I can help with.

 Our community is constantly giving back and supporting our clients on their journey to safety, healing and freedom. We would like to highlight just a few special cases from the month of January. With domestic violence being the leading cause of homelessness for women and children, the timing couldn’t be better for the expansion of our transitional housing shelter. During calendar year 2015, 177 women and children resided in our shelters spending a total of 10,387 safe “bed nights” with us.
