The garden has long been recognized as a place of healing. Backyard gardeners and horticultural therapists alike can attest to the healthful benefits of getting hands dirty to help new life grow. The Women’s and Children’s Alliance will reawaken the soil at our shelter’s garden as part of an opportunity aimed at improving the holistic health of women and children at the shelter. With construction for the new transitional housing facility underway this spring and summer, the garden project will take root in the spring of 2017.
As you may know, February was National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM). While the WCA works to engage young people year-round, February marks the conclusion and awards ceremony of our annual Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest. The PSA Contest is open to all junior high, high school and college students throughout the state. There were 11 entries in this year’s contest, each focused on one of three themes: relationship abuse, healthy relationships, active bystander skills. You can view all of the entries here.

I count my lucky stars that my job is so awesome and personally rewarding. I have the great fortune to engage with current and potential corporate sponsors that truly impact the funding and services to help our clients. An important aspect of my job that cannot be left out is finding potential in-kind Corporate Pillars. We wanted to take a moment to highlight several In-Kind Corporate Pillars that truly make a different in our ability to provide life-changing services.
I am an Ambassador for the WCA. My role has allowed me to grow in education and knowledge about what the WCA does and provides. I have been able to share this knowledge at volunteer and outreach events across the valley. I have also used this position to help in outreach inside my personal life, educating family, friends, co-workers and new people I meet.

As we head into spring, we continue to reminisce about the amazing acts of generosity directed toward our clients and our staff by our community over the recent holiday season. At times, it felt as if our building was going to burst at the seams for all the gifts for our clients and their children.
When March rolls around it means spring is just around the corner. This gives us the opportunity to think about what is important to us and plant the seeds for the changes that we wish to see in the coming months. Now is a fantastic time for each of us to start conversations around the issues of domestic abuse and sexual assault with our friends and family that can continue throughout spring and beyond. What better time to talk than during March 6-12 because it is #NoMore Week of Action 2016, sponsored by NoMore.org.
The Oscars this year was a spectacular night of glitz and glamour that honored the best in the motion pictures industry in 2015. It was fun to watch, particularly when Spotlight won for best picture (my personal favorite). However, there was more to the evening than simply handing out Oscars. During the telecast, the serious issue of campus sexual assault took center stage.
