Let me take you back a few years. There was a time when a national telephone company used to come in to the WCA and have our shelter children call Santa – who was on the other end, really – and tell Mr. Claus what they wanted for Christmas. Several weeks later, at a Christmas party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Claus, the children would receive the gift that they asked for, as well as a book. I shall never forget one young boy, probably around nine, who asked for a miner’s head light. I watched as he opened his package – and there it was – a toy version and inexpensive – his very own miner’s head might – this boy was absolutely delighted. Out of the packaging it came and the elastic was stretched until it fit around his head. He looked at me and said “Am I dreaming or what?” The power of kindness and the spirit of giving touched the heart of this young boy – and, suddenly there was magic. Let us all keep the magic alive!
