Nurturing for Families is an evidence-based program that has been facilitated at the Women’s and Children’s Alliance since 2009. It has been field tested on families identified as abusive and neglectful and its ultimate goal is to stop the intergenerational cycle of child abuse in families by building nurturing parenting skills. It teaches alternatives to hitting and yelling and aids in the development of a positive self-concept and enhanced self-esteem in all family members. Program clients attend weekly groups that are facilitated by WCA Clinicians. In 2013, 64% of the WCA’s shelter clients grew up in a home where there was violence and inconsistent parenting. They welcome the introduction of new, and effective, parenting techniques. The Nurturing for Families curriculum is building new, stronger, bonds in the families that the WCA serves.
