School’s Out: Keeping Kids Healthy and Active 

 “There’s nothing to do!” This might be a phrase that every parent is very familiar with, especially when it comes to their child and the start of summer vacation.  Those of us that live in the Treasure Valley are incredibly lucky as the valley boasts a large number of free, or nearly free, activities for the entire family throughout the year. As summer vacation approaches I would like to share some of my favorite resources for families in the valley. Below you will find brief overviews of the programs that I would like to highlight and some information about their summer offerings. Run/Walk for only $20 

ANY DISTANCE Until Midnight June 14

Our 8th Annual SueB 5K has become a certified 5K and 10K course this year thanks to a wonderful partnership with the YMCA! Join us along the beautiful Boise greenbelt.

This event not only raises funds to support services at the WCA, but raises awareness surrounding the prevalence of domestic and sexual abuse in our community. We will have Dutch Bros, Boise Fry Company, Kanack Attack, Ben & Jerry’s, a bungee trampoline, face painting, photo booth and more!

The race will be held October 1st at Julia Davis Park at 1:00 P.M. to kick of Domestic Violence Awareness Month! We hope to see you there!

Volunteering Creates Better Health

If you are looking to stay healthy this summer, might I suggest volunteering? According to Harvard Medical School, volunteering reduces stress and gets people physically active. The social connectedness of volunteering can also contribute to positive mental health. In fact, the Corporation for National and Community Service found significant, positive relationships between volunteering and lower levels of depression. In a study by United Health Group, 94 percent of people who volunteered in the last twelve months said that volunteering improved their mood.

Donor Spotlight: Jadon and Jayden

Award Winning Partnerships

Communication is key to informing and educate donors, potential and current clients and community members. Especially as we work to change our culture and achieve our vision where everyone thrives in safe, healthy relationships.

In early May, our communications and outreach team along with some of our board members and friends attended the Idaho Press Club Awards. We were more than a little surprised and quite humbled to close out the evening with several top accolades from the Idaho Press Club at the end of the evening.

Volunteer Spotlight: Molina Healthcare

Molina Healthcare employees had a blast reorganizing our client pantry in one of our shelters this past Saturday. They even purchased a new shelving unit for us. Thank you so much to these amazing volunteers for their hard work and enthusiasm!

Corporate Pillar Spotlight: Chandlers

We are very grateful to Chandlers Prime Steaks-Fine Seafood. Owners Rex and Mary Beth Chandler are longtime WCA supporters, most recently through their special Mother’s Day celebration.

 On May 25, 2017, a crowd gathered outside 9th & Grove Streets in downtown Boise to celebrate Chandlers 10th anniversary and remodel of the Boise restaurant with a grand reopening and special ribbon-cutting celebration.
