As we head into spring, we continue to reminisce about the amazing acts of generosity directed toward our clients and our staff by our community over the recent holiday season. At times, it felt as if our building was going to burst at the seams for all the gifts for our clients and their children.

Many of the families living in the shelter during Christmas have moved out of the shelter, making room for new women and children – seeking safety from violence and abuse in their homes. Often, these women leave many – if not all—of their personal possessions behind, arriving with only what they can carry or are wearing. Sometimes, they arrive without even the most basic items like shoes, pajamas or a toothbrush.

For these new shelter residents, as with hundreds before them, the WCA is a refuge and that first night in the shelter just might be the first night’s sleep where they can rest body and mind without the fear of being hurt. However, the staff at the WCA also works to help these women and children rebuild their lives – often including the need to purchase food, clothes and basic staples to set up a new forever home.

With the blooming of new bulbs and warm rays of sun, we feel the hope the WCA offers for these women and their children. If you are looking to join us in helping pave the path for this journey to a life free of abuse for our clients, consider a donation of a gift card for groceries, clothing, household items or gas. With these donations, our shelter staff is able to purchase items for clients coming into the shelter to help meet basic needs as well as help these women get the items they need to build a safe, comfortable and happy new forever home for their families.
