Jennifer Spencer, Volunteer and Events Coordinator
“I donated to make moms and children happy”, said six-year-old Adalyn as she dropped off 16 “Blessing Bags” for clients.
In my role as Volunteer and Events Coordinator, I am constantly overwhelmed with the generosity and compassion of the youth in this community. Adalyn is one of many young people who provide such needed support through donations and volunteering.
Michelle P. and her daughter Julia help weekly in our thrift store as well as Paisley H. and her mother, Julie. Budding Eagle Scouts, Zach, Kaeden and Tanner all hosted donation drives for us in the last several months. Tanner donated more than 30 bags of clothing for our clients. You can read more about his thoughtful donation here.
All these young philanthropists worked closely with their parents to make their compassion come to life. From conversations with these youth and their families, I learned that many parents/guardians began teaching their children the concept of philanthropy from a very early age. They expressed to me the joy and pride they feel from seeing their children care so much about those in need.
As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “If we are to reach real peace in this world, we shall have to begin with children.”
