October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and, as a supporter of the WCA, we are doing our part to raise awareness and support survivors. Below explains the history and importance of DVAM:
Created by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) in 1981 as a Day of Unity, and since transformed into a month-long national campaign, Domestic Violence Awareness Month was intended to connect those who were working to end domestic violence. Initial themes that emerged surrounding this dedicated month included mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who are working to end this epidemic.
Celebrated annually in October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month has evolved into a full-fledged movement that reached beyond its initial themes and now aims to educate the broader community.
There are many ways to get involved during October and we encourage you to make part in some of these meaningful opportunities:
- Domestic Violence Awareness Month Press Conference: 10am at Idaho Peace Officers’ Memorial on September 27th
- First Thursday Scavenger Hunt: visit the Ada County Victim Services Center from 5pm to 8pm on October 3rd to take part in an educational scavenger hunt around downtown Boise!
- SueB Memorial 5K: race begins at 12 noon (register here) and the Community Fair begins at 10:30am at Julia Davis Park on October 6th
- WCA Open House: 10am to 1pm at WCA Downtown Boise office (720 W Washington St) on October 19th
We hope you find a meaningful way to take part this October! For any further inquiries about DVAM, reach out to the WCA team at [email protected].
